What is cannabigerol (CBG)?
Cannabigerol is a non-intoxicating/psychoactive molecule that forms the basis of all other important cannabinoids. Without CBG, CBD, CBN, CBC, and several others would not exist. CBG also plays a fundamental role in the formation of THC, CBD, and other key components of the cannabis plant. Industrial hemp doesn't initially have high levels of CBD; over time, the chemical structure of the plant changes, with the chemical compounds within reacting with various catalysts. Regarding CBG, it's one of the first cannabinoids to form, even when the plant is a seedling, and it's created by CBGA reacting with certain enzymes (geranyl pyrophosphate and olivetolic acid).
The formation of CBG then triggers a chain reaction of chemical changes that ultimately lead to the formation of other cannabinoids such as CBD, CBC, and THC. But CBG isn't just a precursor molecule—it also appears to be beneficial for your health.
What does CBG do:
CBG works much the same as other cannabinoids and interacts with cannabinoid receptors throughout your body. However, this cannabinoid often doesn't get as much attention as CBD because mature hemp plants contain only a small amount of CBG: about 1% of the total cannabinoid count. Based on early preclinical research, we know that CBG is not intoxicating; it doesn't get you high. Moreover, it appears to have an affinity for one or the other receptor, not both. The fact that CBG has an affinity for both receptors and has no side effects makes it a very interesting substance for your health.
What does CBG help with?
- Reduction of eye pressure and helps to better drain moisture from the eyes
- reducing anxious feelings
- reducing oxidative stress and thus the damage it causes in our body
- Muscle relaxant
- analgesic
- Suppression of skin cell proliferation, can be useful for skin problems
- appetite-stimulating
- antibacterial
