The cannabinoid cannabinol (CBN) is one of dozens of active compounds found in cannabis. Not to be confused with cannabidiol (CBD). CBN is primarily found in old outdoor weed with a high THC content. CBN is much less popular or well-known than THC or CBD. Moreover, it's not easy to extract from a cannabis plant. Science has begun researching the potential beneficial effects of CBN on the human body. What do we know so far about this "sleep-inducing" cannabinoid?

Where does CBN come from?
The cannabis plant cannot produce CBN itself. However, the substance occurs naturally in the female flowers of the cannabis plant. Unlike many other cannabinoids, cannabinol is not derived from cannabigerolic acid (CBGA). In fact, CBN is a metabolite of tetrahydrocannabinol. Cannabinol (CBN) is formed when THC is exposed to heat, sunlight, and air. At that point, a chemical reaction (oxidation) begins. For this reason, old or oxidized cannabis flowers contain high levels of CBN. However, the CBN content in the plant, even in hardened or mature cannabis flowers, does not exceed 1%.

CBN properties:
Cannabinol, like many other cannabis compounds, has an analgesic effect. It also has an anti-inflammatory effect and can reduce involuntary muscle contractions such as spasms and convulsions. It is also extremely suitable for people with sleep problems. It acts as an antioxidant, which can help prevent certain damage to the body. CBN itself has a very mild psychoactive effect. It is estimated that the substance has about 10% of the psychoactive effect of its better-known counterpart, THC. The effect of cannabinol only truly becomes apparent when taken simultaneously with THC, as CBN enhances the effect of THC. The combination of both substances gives people a strong stoned and drowsy feeling: the well-known "couch-lock effect."

CBN side effects:
Generally, CBN oil doesn't cause any side effects, as long as the recommended dosage isn't exceeded. If you're just starting to use CBN, your body won't be used to it. Your body will then enter a detox mode. Temporary side effects such as fatigue, dizziness, or changes in bowel movements will quickly disappear. CBN can sometimes lower blood pressure.
